Who could have known that Tha Pope lived just 60 miles down the road?

Tommy Pope Jr., a Cedartown native, has very vague memories of his life before music. The fact is: he has always bonded with music although he didn’t begin fumbling around in the studio until he was age 16. During this time Tha Pope attended Pepperell High School, the school made famous by Marcus Dickson (teenager accused of molesting white girl). Despite the event’s disruption to the school, Tha Pope was still able to perform well as the point guard of his Varsity Basketball team. In between games and school Pope spent much of his time doing music. “The more time I spent in the studio the more anxious I got” says The Pope, recalling how he got his first Label deal. Not realizing long after he inked the deal with Dead Tight Committee that he had made a mistake. The owner of the Label was going broke and had starting selling everything in his possession. Tha Pope had to learn to stand on his own two if he was going to make it in this industry.

In 2005, Pope formed a group called Mob Style with Skinny J and Malice Mike. The group was proficient at writing, laying their own tracks as well as mixing, and producing them. Mob Style traveled up and down the east coast opening for acts such as Soulja Slim (R.I.P), Young Jeezy, Young Buck, T.I and more. The members of the group have decided to take time off to focus on their individual projects. Street Waves was established in 2006 with Tha Pope as the only artist. He feels he has more control of his career as “Big Cahuna” of the label. Street Wave is where Pope learned to engineer and make beats. Pope admits he practically locked his self in the studio for 4 months learning how to master the production side. To date, there are over 100 songs recorded, awaiting proper to release the people.

If I had to describe Tha Popes personality, I would say that he comes off as extremely blasé. To my surprise this seemingly laid back guy drives an hour and fifteen minutes to Atlanta 4 times a week just to secure his presence in the Southern City of Dreams. You can find Tha Pope in a city near you. He currently averages 5-15 shows a month. “You Gotta Have Rank To Be The Pope”
